Erie, Pa. — Fifth-graders from various schools got the chance to learn how to be good stewards of groundwater Thursday at the 2015 Great Lakes Children’s Water Festival at Penn State Behrend in Haborcreek Township.
The event was put on by the Water Systems Council, a national nonprofit that protects groundwater resources in the U.S.
It provided funding for more than 1,700 fifth-grade students from schools in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York to attend the festival at Behrend.
Each child spent four and a half hours at eight different hands-on activities, learning about protecting and being good stewards of groundwater, according to Margaret Martens, executive director of the Water Systems Council.
