WWT Georgia Project “New wells drilled for Hitchcock Road residents”

The road to obtaining clean water was a long one for the Hitchcock Road residents. When their wells failed, they were 20-25 years old and were bored or hand dug and shallow. Public water appeared the only option and it was going to be an expensive one for the residents until WSC member Jerrell Greene presented an alternative. He came to the commissioners in August of 2011 to stand up for his industry. Greene said he has been reading about the contaminated wells in the newspaper and had heard about it from the community. He told board members that he was at the meeting to tell them water wells are a viable option to furnish people with good drinking water. Greene contacted the Well Water Trust, and that turned out to be the solution for these residents. Four households received new wells. One recipient, Mary Waller, said her well completely dried up in May and she had to bring in water for everything including flushing toilets. She said she has a bad back and her grandchildren have been staying with her to help. “We had to go 13 miles to get water. You don’t realize how much water you use in a day,” Waller commented.
